The Thames Tunnel is a major new London sewer - planned for construction between 2013 and 2020.

"The project will tackle the problem of overflows from the capital’s Victorian sewers for at least the next 100 years, and enable the UK to meet European environmental standards.
The capital’s Victorian sewerage system needs more capacity to meet the needs of modern-day London. Though built to last and in good condition, the existing sewerage network is now too small to transfer all London’s sewage to our treatment works for processing (after rainfall).
39 million tonnes of untreated sewage flushes into the Thames in a typical year. That’s enough to fill the Royal Albert Hall 450 times. It’s an unacceptable problem, getting progressively worse."

Depending on the exact route chosen, the tunnel will be between 23km and 32km long. The tunnel will be 7.2m in diameter and will start 40m deep in Acton and follow the river to finish between 65m and 75m deep at Beckton depending on the route.

The tunnel is bored outwards from a series of vertical shafts. These shafts are used for access during the work, but are also part of the permanent structures once the work has completed.

Impact

A significant number of barges will be used to ferry materials to and from the work sites. Details

One shaft site is needed near the Shadwell/Limehouse area. Shadwell Basin and King Edward Memorial Park were both considered as possible locations, but the current plans show the chosen site is just downriver of Shadwell basin on the foreshore by King Edward Memorial Park. This would involve building a permanent platform out into the river. An access road will still be needed and this is planned to cut through the east end of the park from The Highway. Details

November 2011: The shaft site has had minor changed but has not moved. The access road has been changed to run next to the Thames Path from Glamis Road. The long-term plan is that the access road will merge with Thames Path, making a much wider Path. King Edward Memorial Park Foreshore – phase two site information paper
