On the trip to Wales in August 2008, we managed to fit into a VW long wheelbase hitop a total of 18 kayaks (in 3 layers of 5 standard boats, plus 3 playboats laid across the width by the doors), all sorts of equipment including more than 18 paddles, several bags of helmets and buoyancy aids, a couple of tents and assorted safety gear.
On a trip to HPP in September 2007, we managed to fit into a Luton a total of 35 assorted kayaks, several bags of helmets, several bags of buoyancy aids, several tents and a barbeque.
