Induction for beginners - Booking form

Wikimaster: Add April, May, June 2023 beginner courses

The [[Course for beginners|induction program]] runs every month (except December) and is open for booking three months in advance.
* Each program is four consecutive Tuesday evenings.
* The session aims to start at 7pm, so you would need to arrive around 6:30pm.
* Please use the form below to book your place online.
* Only two places may be booked by one individual (multiple bookings may be deleted without refund).
* The fee is not refundable and no credits will be given for missed sessions.
* Each monthly induction program has a waiting list but cancellations are rare.
* Please read in advance the two pages about [[Bring|what you need to bring]] and [[Location|where we are]].

* You will become a temporary member of the Club for the duration of the induction program and for 3 weeks afterwards, which you can use to explore what we have to offer and decide to convert to a long-term membership. During your temporary membership we expect you to abide by our Club rules and code of conduct.

It is the policy of: '''Tower Hamlets Canoe Club''' that all paddlers, volunteers, coaches and parents show respect and understanding for each other and conduct themselves in a way that reflects the principles of the Club. The aim is for all paddlers to improve performance and have fun. Everyone involved in the Club should abide by the Club Rules and Policies.

'''Paddlers''' Take care of all property belonging to the club or club members. Treat other club members with respect at all times — on and off the water — treat other paddlers as you would want to be treated yourself. Control tempers and avoid behaviour which may affect or upset others. Co-operate and listen to your coach or club officials.

'''Club Officials, Coaches and Volunteers''' Consider the wellbeing and safety of paddlers before the development of performance. Develop an appropriate working relationship with performers, based on mutual trust and respect. Display consistently high standards of behaviour. Follow British Canoeing and club guidelines and policies. Hold the appropriate, up-dated qualifications and insurance. Encourage paddlers to value their performance and not just results. Never condone the use of prohibited substances. Please note that all Club Officials, Coaches and leaders are volunteers.

Discrimination on the grounds of gender, marital status, race, colour, disability, sexual identity, age, occupation, religious beliefs or political opinion will not be tolerated. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable. If bullying does occur, all paddlers should be able to tell the club committee and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly.

Bullying can include:
* Physical : pushing, kicking, hitting - any use of violence or theft
* Verbal : name calling, sarcasm, taunts or gestures
* Sexual : unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments
* Emotional: tormenting, ridiculing, humiliating and ignoring
* Cyber : threats or misuse of all types of internet, social media or messaging

All paddlers taking part in club night activities, either on the water or land based, are expected to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for their activity. Taking part in paddling activities under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs is prohibited. It is a non-smoking site. It is expected that club equipment will be subjected to general wear & damage during paddling activities. However, if club equipment is damaged due to negligence or misuse the club member may be asked to contribute financially to its repair/replacement. All paddlers are expected to respect the residents and property at Shadwell Basin Activity Centre. All SBOAC equipment must be used and stored appropriately.

Members are encouraged to challenge any unacceptable behaviour. If any members experience or witness violation of any of the above they are encouraged to report the incident/concern to the THCC committee. All concerns raised will be addressed in a confidential manner. Advice for river trips on Tuesdays

If you want to go on the river on Tuesday night, please read the following guidance as to what you need to have to paddle:

===Signing up===

There is a sign-up sheet on the blue clipboard outside the office every week.
Please write your full name clearly and circle your level.
Anyone who is a [[BCU One Star|1 star]] or [[BCU Two Star|2 star]] and wants to paddle on the river must check with the leader or co-ordinator first.

===Timings===
You need to be ready with your boat and paddle and kit at 6.45pm.
If not, you may not be able to go - we are keen to be getting on the water at 7pm and aim to be back 9pm.
Late arrivals may not be able to go - it is unfair to hold up the whole group.

===Kit===

* Personal
** Lights - As it gets darker everyone must have at least two lights. One on the boat and one on themselves. A good thread here; towerhamletscanoeclub.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1411 suggests the type of lights you could get. It is good practice to have lights with you all year round, as there are only few nights when they are not needed.
** Whistle - Everyone should have one of these tied onto their person. Usually around a BA strap.
** Other gear - As it gets colder, consider carrying a cag or fleece, hat and gloves in a dry bag in your kayak. Often there is room behind the seat. It can get surprisingly cold paddling at night.
** Shoes - (not flip flops) are compulsory during any paddling activity on the river or basin.
* Group
**First Aid Kit - Each group going on the river must have a simple first aid kit with them.
**VHF and Towlines

===Who can paddle and where===

A [[BCU Four Star|4 star]] or [[BCU Five Star|5 star]] sea kayaker can paddle anywhere in a group of minimum 3 competent paddlers. They can take other less experienced paddlers according to club rules and ratios. They can also use double kayaks and wider mix and match the group.

A [[BCU Three Star|3 star]] sea kayaker can paddle upstream or downstream in a group of a minimum of three 3* paddlers. Each 3* paddler, who wants to paddle in a group of 3* paddlers only, needs to be able to organise and execute a rescue in the environment of tidal Thames.

A group of 3* is not allowed to take any 2* upstream without a 4* or 5* being present.
They can take a competent 2* downstream provided they are able to look after the group and execute a rescue if necessary.

A [[BCU Two Star|2 star]] can paddle downstream in a group of other three 3* sea kayakers - provided the conditions and skills of the group are suitable for such group to go.

A 2* can paddle upstream if there’s a 4*/5* leader present and the skills of the 2* paddler are suitable for such environment.

A [[BCU One Star|1 star]] paddler can paddle downstream when a L2 coach with 4* MWE is present.

QP - A Qualified Paddler is someone who is competent paddler on 3* level but without relevant formal UK qualification, and is assessed and signed off as per club rules.

===Skills update===
It is important that everyone who wants to paddle on the Thames keeps up their skill level by regular training and refreshers, for example rescues. Personal skills of each paddler, regardless of star award, need to match the environment and the needs of the group. The leader or co-ordinator have the right not to take paddlers on the river regardless of their star award. Plainly speaking a 3* who can’t/won’t rescue could be considered as a 2* paddler, and e.g. may not be allowed to paddle upstream, or 4* who does not keep up with leadership skills, may be asked not to lead groups.

Treat other club members with respect at all times — on and off the water — treat other paddlers as you would want to be treated yourself. Control tempers and avoid behaviour which may affect or upset others. Co-operate and listen to your coach or club officials.

'''Club Officials, Coaches and Volunteers''' Consider the wellbeing and safety of paddlers before the development of performance. Develop an appropriate working relationship with performers, based on mutual trust and respect. Display consistently high standards of behaviour. Follow British Canoeing and club guidelines and policies. Hold the appropriate, up-dated qualifications and insurance. Encourage paddlers to value their performance and not just results. Never condone the use of prohibited substances. Please note that all Club Officials, Coaches and leaders are volunteers.

Discrimination on the grounds of gender, marital status, race, colour, disability, sexual identity, age, occupation, religious beliefs or political opinion will not be tolerated. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable. If bullying does occur, all paddlers should be able to tell the club committee and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly.

Bullying can include:
* Physical : pushing, kicking, hitting - any use of violence or theft
* Verbal : name calling, sarcasm, taunts or gestures
* Sexual : unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments
* Emotional: tormenting, ridiculing, humiliating and ignoring
* Cyber : threats or misuse of all types of internet, social media or messaging

All paddlers taking part in club night activities, either on the water or land based, are expected to wear appropriate clothing and footwear for their activity. Taking part in paddling activities under the influence of alcohol or recreational drugs is prohibited. It is a non-smoking site. It is expected that club equipment will be subjected to general wear & damage during paddling activities. However, if club equipment is damaged due to negligence or misuse the club member may be asked to contribute financially to its repair/replacement. All paddlers are expected to respect the residents and property at Shadwell Basin Activity Centre. All SBOAC equipment must be used and stored appropriately.

Members are encouraged to challenge any unacceptable behaviour. If any members experience or witness violation of any of the above they are encouraged to report the incident/concern to the THCC committee. All concerns raised will be addressed in a confidential manner. ===Beginners===

If you have little or no paddling experience you can attend one of our Beginners' Courses which provide an introduction to canoeing and kayaking and lead to a [http://www.bcu.org.uk/tests-and-awards/personal-performance-awards/paddlesport-start-i-1-to-3-star/ BCU One Star Award] on completion.

These are run monthly (normally starting on the first Tuesday of the month) over four consecutive Tuesday evenings. The course fee is £30, payable on booking. The fee is not normally refundable and no credits will be given for missed sessions.

You will need to [[beginnersbooking|book]] a place in advance for all Beginners' Courses.

Please come along to [[contact|Shadwell Basin]] at 6.30 pm with [[bring|appropriate clothes]]. You ''will'' get wet so bring a change of clothes and a towel. On completing the course you may join the club (see below for membership details).

===Experienced paddlers===

If you are an experienced paddler you can come along for a trial session to see if you like the club. Trial sessions cost £7.50 per week and you must join the club after three trial sessions if you want to continue to paddle with us.

As an experienced paddler you can come along on any Tuesday night but it is helpful if you can let us know in advance so that we can find someone to show you the ropes.

If you would like to meet us before coming along to a trial session then please join us upstairs in the [http://www.pubs.com/pub_details.cfm?ID=227 Prospect of Whitby] pub (next to Shadwell Basin) from 9:00 pm where we socialise after paddling (if you can't find us just ask the friendly bar staff or look for people carrying paddles).

All queries about what we do, when we meet, fees, membership, equipment etc can be answered by looking at the website. You will receive a faster response this way. The club is run on a strictly non-commercial, voluntary basis so we cannot always respond immediately to e-mails. ===Membership===

Annual membership costs £50 (£30 unwaged). £2.50 must be paid whenever you attend the club. An additional £2.50 is paid if you use the [[pool]]. As an alternative to paying a weekly subscription of £2.50, you can buy an annual season ticket for £99 which covers all your paddling for a year including all Tuesdays, Thursdays and any weekend trips.

To apply for membership of the club please submit an online application and confirm this by paying your subscription to the treasurer.

Online applications are preferred as they ease our administration but if you cannot use the online application form then a paper membership form is available to download. This should be filled in and given to the club treasurer or secretary.

New club members should take time to familiarise themselves with the Members’ Handbook. This sets out the club rules and the standard of conduct that is required from members.
